Stormy Weather

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

I’m now in the Midwest and this is the season for storms.  Last night I was awakened by wind that was quite loud.  It downed out the thunder and my nighttime sound machine.  I could see the lightening and feel the house shake so it seemed quite natural to move down to the 1st floor and check out the weather on the TV.  At least the electricity was still on.

I eventually learned that a tornado had come quite close to our house and that wind gusts were over 70 miles per hour.  That’s probably the sound that awoken me.  But what surprised me was how it took another 20 minutes before the sirens came on.  That’s a long time for tornadic weather to be afoot with no notice to the metropolitan area.

I had thought that the new policy in sirens was that they’d be set off when conditions were ripe, that a tornado was probable - not officially sighted - to give folks the warning they really need to seek shelter.  I am disappointed that it was not to be so.
